Spider Costume for Cats: Eight Legs, Nothing on the Face

Tortoiseshell cat wearing a black felt spider costume for cats, face and whiskers completely free

A spider costume for cats sounds like a recipe for a five-minute wrestling match that ends with the costume under the sofa and the cat under the bed. Most of them are. The ones built with elastic leg holes, a hood, or a headpiece that rides down over the eyes get removed by the wearer long before you have opened the camera app.

This one is built differently. The Pawdulge Spider Pet Costume slips over the head and settles across the back, eight soft felt legs splayed to either side, held by a single adjustable strap at the neck. No sleeves. Nothing over the face. Your cat goes from ordinary house pet to faintly unsettling in about four seconds.

What Makes This Spider Costume for Cats Actually Wearable

Three things, and all of them come down to what the costume doesn't do.

It doesn't touch the face. This is the one that matters most with cats. Whiskers are sensory equipment, not decoration, and a cat whose peripheral vision is blocked will not stand still long enough to be photographed. Ears, eyes and whiskers stay completely clear here, which is the difference between a costume a cat tolerates and one that becomes a fight.

It doesn't restrict the legs. There is nothing to push a paw through. The whole costume sits on the back and shoulders, so your cat can run, jump onto a counter and climb exactly as usual. Most refusals come from a cat discovering it cannot move the way it expects to.

It weighs almost nothing. The body and legs are cut from soft black felt — light, quiet, and with no stiff edges pressing against the skin. Quiet matters more than people expect: a costume that rustles with every step keeps reminding the cat it is there.

Seen from above, the whole design makes sense at a glance: the body sits centered on the back, the eight legs fan out flat rather than standing away from the fur, and there is nothing anywhere near the head. That flatness is why it doesn't catch on doorframes or chair legs when your cat decides to squeeze past one.

Pepper, a tortoiseshell with a flair for the dramatic and strong opinions about being looked at, took to this one immediately. She spent the first evening stalking the hallway at half speed, apparently under the impression that eight legs required a more serious walk. We did not correct her.

Getting the Size Right

The spider comes in two sizes only, and they cover cats and small dogs:

  • S — chest 14–16.5" (36–42cm), neck 9.5–14" (24–36cm). Kittens, most adult cats, teacup breeds.
  • M — chest 15.5–23.5" (40–60cm), neck 12.5–18" (32–46cm). Large cats and small dogs.

Measure the chest around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with your cat standing rather than sitting. Then measure the neck where a collar would sit. Snug, with room to slide two fingers underneath.

Ignore your cat's weight. Two cats at the same weight can be built completely differently, and the chest measurement is the only number that decides the size. If your measurement falls between S and M, take M — a strap can be tightened, a costume that is genuinely too small cannot be let out. Our guide to measuring for a costume walks through the same method in more detail.

How Long Cats Will Actually Wear It

Longer than a full-body outfit, but that is not the same as forever, and the first fitting sets the tone for every one after it.

Put it on for a couple of minutes, with treats, well before the evening you actually want photographs. Let your cat walk around, jump onto a favourite perch and groom normally while wearing it. What you are looking for is indifference: a cat who forgets about it and goes back to whatever she was doing.

Watch for flattened ears, a low tail, a frozen crouch, or repeated attempts to bite at the neck strap. Those mean stop and try again another day, not push through. Our guide on helping a nervous pet feel confident in their first costume covers the gradual version of this in full.

Ordering Before Halloween

The spider costume ships from our production partners overseas: 1 to 3 business days of processing, then roughly 7 to 14 days of delivery. That is a real window rather than a same-week turnaround, so if Halloween night is the target, order at least three weeks ahead to be safe.

If you have more than one pet — and if there is one cat in a spider costume, there is usually a second animal watching with interest — a second costume of any kind gets 15% off automatically at checkout. The Bat Wings Pet Costume uses the same face-free, legs-free approach and runs in three sizes rather than two, which makes it the better option for a bigger dog in the household. We wrote about it in our piece on the bat wings costume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a spider costume for cats stay on while my cat moves around?
Yes. The adjustable neck strap holds the body in place across the back, and because nothing loops around the legs, normal movement doesn't shift it. Tighten the strap so it is snug with two fingers' clearance and it stays put.

Does the spider costume cover my cat's face or eyes?
No. There is no hood, mask or headpiece. The entire costume sits behind the head, leaving ears, eyes and whiskers completely free — which is the main reason cats accept it.

What size spider costume does an average adult cat need?
Most adult cats fit the S, which covers a 14–16.5" chest. Larger cats and small dogs take the M. Measure the chest behind the front legs rather than guessing from weight.
